Raja Ampat is remote, and that is part of its magic. There is no single direct flight from abroad: you travel in stages, with the gateway being the town of Sorong on the Bird's Head of New Guinea.
Step 1 — Fly to Sorong
All journeys begin at Sorong's airport, Domine Eduard Osok (airport code SOQ). It is well connected to the rest of Indonesia by domestic flights. Garuda Indonesia has operated non-stop flights from Bali (Denpasar, DPS), while many travellers connect through Jakarta (CGK), Makassar (UPG) or Manado (MDC).
International visitors usually fly into a major Indonesian hub first, then take a domestic flight onward to Sorong. Schedules and routes change with the seasons, so check current airline timetables when you plan.
Step 2 — Sorong to Waisai
Waisai, on the island of Waigeo, is the capital of Raja Ampat and the hub for most homestays and resorts. There are two ways to cross from Sorong:
By ferry
Passenger ferries depart from Sorong's public harbour (Pelabuhan Rakyat) and reach Waisai in roughly two hours. Tickets are generally bought at the port ticket office on the day of travel, with cash, card and QRIS digital payments accepted. Departure times are limited and can change, so confirm locally before you rely on a specific sailing.
By light aircraft
Susi Air operates small planes between Sorong and Waisai's Marinda Airport. These are light aircraft with a strict baggage allowance (around 15 kg), so they suit travellers packing light. Seats are limited and schedules vary.
Step 3 — Onward to your island
From Waisai, your homestay or resort will usually arrange a boat transfer to its island. Depending on where you are staying, this can be anything from a short hop to a journey of a couple of hours across open water, so it is worth coordinating arrival times in advance. For the more remote southern islands around Misool, transfers are longer and best organised directly with your accommodation.
Don't forget
On arrival you must hold a valid Indonesian visa and pay the Raja Ampat marine park permit and visitor entry ticket. Everything is explained on our visa & entry page, and you can choose your base on the where to stay page.
